Reflextion

So far i have been working on a scene where the 2 characters are about to start boxing. I have been looking at body language in boxing matches. I have been especially looking at warm ups and how they start. I have also looked at the richard wiliams book as guideness. The book has been reccomended to me by Iredia so i have spent time looking in depth at it. I have also looked at one of my favourite games called Fight Night. I have looked at the body language of the boxers before they start boxing. I have looked at boxers such as Mohammed Ali and Mike Tyson. The paticular character i referenced from was Mohammed Ali, i looked at how he jumped on the spot, ready to fight.

Reflection

So far working in a group with Iredia has turned out well. We have kept in contact with each other on a daily basis, so that we know where are. Using Toon Boom has been a totally new experience to me. Especially when i specialism is within 3D. I have started to do a run cycle within Toom Boom. I have spent time looking at the Richard Williams book, which has been recommended by our client. I have also looked at various run cycles on Youtube for reference. As you can see i did a quick sketch of what my key poses will look like. The first image shows my character jumping up and down, and the second image shows the character blinking slowly, and the last 2 show the other balloon coming towards the screen then splat with the blue zoo logo.

I have added colour to all my designs to see what they look like. And also so that Oilly can decide which character he like the most out of the lot of them. Because we are doing the brief for Blue Zoo. I have looked at a range of different styles. I did not just want to look at a ballon.

I have added some colour to this character to see what it will look like. It not looking bad so far. The reason why i am using blue is because the logo is blue and when the characters run into each other they form the logo. The other character is going to be white.

This is one of my favourite characters that i have done so far. The feed back that i have got from iredia has been good. So i guess i will be sticking with this character.

character Designs

This is my first character that i have done with is based on my research. I have put a helmet on the character to show that it is an amateur.

This is a very useful image for my blog. Not only is it a balloon but the eyes are very powerful. The eyes are very doppy and give the balloon some character. I might make the personality of my character very doppy. Instead of haveing a fierce character.

I like the character on the left hand side because of the way the eyes have been exaggerated. This is something i have to remember that i can exaggerate anything that i want, it does't have to be real.

I like the designs of the m and m characters. I also like the shading as well it adds a lot of depth to it. This is something im going to take into consideration when doing my own designs.

I do not know what it is but this character stood out to me the most. I think it is partly because most boxers are aggresive. And also because of the pose.

This was one of the designs that caught my eye. The main reason why this picture caught my eye was because of the bright colours. I also like the different shapes used within the characters.

This is a very nice 2d character design. The thing that stands out the most with this character is the strong black out line, it feels very 2d.

Looking at these designs reminded me of blue zoo. The designs are very illustrative and i can see myself using this as reference. They are even shaped similar to a ballon.

I like the style of this character very much, it isn't too complicated but it is still very effective.

This is a paticular style that i like, and i might consider using something like this for one of my designs for my character. The designs are not too complicated, but very sylelized.
We have now established that we will be doing this short ident in 2D. so i will be looking more into the Richar Williams book. I am going to be working on the boxing ident which should be very interesting. I intend to take on board all the information that has been given to me by olley. The most crucial part is goin to be the run cycle, so i will be doing alot of observations.

Reflection

After looking at all the ideas that we had we had we decided to meet up with Oli. When we meet up with Oli he looked at the ideas that we we had and gave us some good feedback. He liked the idea with the Balloons. The balloons are actual boxing characters. They are getting ready to fight, they run into each other and splat and out of it forms the logo Blue Zoo. He also liked the other idea of a boy with a nest in his head. And in his nest that is on his head are some eggs. The eggs start to shake from side to side till eventually one cracks. And out of it comes out blue zoo with wings. The feed back that we got is to use more anticipation for the boxing scene. And to look at more westerns. Because of the tension between both sides. He also told me to look at the yellow submarine video, and graffiti styles.

For this anamatic that i done there is an helicopter coming down. and gradually ropes come down with the words blue zoo.

This is a scene of one of the anamatics that i had done. Basically there is a helicopter and the words blue zoo that descend from the sky on a parachute. They then collide into each other and form the blue zoo logo.

I have also looked at idents done by cbeebies. I think they do good idents that appeal to the very young. I like the ident because of the good use of perspective, and dynamics.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZJMy6YDccw4&feature=related

This is a simple ident just using type faces. The thing that makes this ident effective is the simple showroom type background that is all white. Not only is that effective but the different camera angles makes it look good.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s8g6488KKQQ&feature=related

This ident is very similar to the previous post, in a sense that they have a similar layout. In this ident a character is about to detonate the dynamites that are in front of him. After he pushed down the explosion that he anticipated did not occur. But behind him Nickelodeon forms, in a gas.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s8g6488KKQQ&feature=related

This is a 2d ident that was done by Nickelodeon. Most idents last a few seconds. This ident is a very short one with a basic concept behind it. This shows that idents do not have to be too complicated in order to execute the brand. The ident just has a character burping into the air with all types of stuff. But at the end of it Nickelodeon forms.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kG9uRfsoJmk&feature=related

I like this ident because of its simplicity, and also it is a live action ident which is a different approach. This is because most idents are computer generated or either 2d animations.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Qa5UKt2PK8

This another ident that i like very much which is similar to one of my previous posts. Once again the mood of the story within the ident changes very quick. The ident starts very relaxed, within a few seconds it becomes very dramatic. Leaving a character getting stuck on a firework and in the air.

Nickelodeon

The main thing that i like about this is the ending. The ident ends with Nickelodeon on the screen, with a paint effect. Even though what is happening in the ident is very dynamic it still gets its messege across.

Nickelodeon

This is another ident that i thought was very interesting. You have a character that discovers a spray can. He then sprays out Nickelodeon silhouetted in orange. Eventually the character continues to spray the can and accidentally sprays himself onto the screen, leaving a silhoute of himself.

E4 Idents

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E4LBGb7TY00&feature=related

This is an E4 ident that i thought worked very well. The reason why i like this so much is because of its simplicity. The has a good idea behind it. A character is sitting down bored and decides to put a TV down its mouth. The characters belly then becomes a TV where you can view everything.

Reflection

For this project i have chosen to work with an animation company called blue Zoo. I will be working with my work partner Iredia. For this project we have chosen to do an ident for Blue Zoo. So far we have come up with various ideas of what we can do for them. So far i have been looking at different idents that have been done by E4 and Nickelodeon. I felt that Blue Zoo has a similar style to both of these companies. Before we got to work with blue zoo we were turned down by a company called Seed Animation. The idea that i had was to have 2 characters on a starting line about to race. Just countdown is beginning one of the characters takes off to early. The other contestant is infuriated. But the other character is running off thinking that he has won the race. The character ends up running into the logo. The response that Seed Animation gave us was that."One person running into a logo can be easily adapted to another brand/company – though you may wish to think about the bigger picture and the implied meaning of the brand “stopping” someone going forward." Another problem they had was that our work could be put onto youtube.

PROJECT BRIEF

Project Title Selling Yourself Project Value 100% of 15 Credits
Unit Title Industry Exercises 3 Unit Code ANI09208
Level/Term Level 2/Term 3 Date of Issue 23/03/2010
Submission Date Friday 21st May 2010 4:00pm ---- Hand –in box in L2 room
Unit Leader Mike Smith
Project Leader and Other Staff Jared Taylor
Alex Hulse
Unit Introduction Monday 22nd/Tuesday 23rd March 2010

Project Brief
This unit builds directly on the Industry Exercises 1 and Industry Exercises 2 units, allowing students to use their portfolio of animation skills to develop finished broadcast animation pieces (in small teams) to be shown during Rave on Air, and to generate an individual show-reel to promote those skills to employers. Students also develop more advanced planning and organisational skills necessary to manage team productions.

This unit has the potential to allow inter-faculty collaboration through the use of animation to promote the work of other courses in the creation of animated advertisements for Rave on Air (product design for example). Intra-faculty collaboration is also possible through the use of other disciplines such as post production and sound design that naturally complement the animation industry. These collaborations will be negotiated on a per team basis.

Aims of the Unit

• To enable students to initiate, plan, and complete complex team projects.
• To enable students to work to broadcast standards of quality.
• To provide experience of establishing and developing team project schedules and tracking progress towards project completion.
• To enable students to demonstrate and promote the range and quality of their animation skills through the production of a show-reel.

The emphasis for this brief is upon fitness for broadcast purposes, if you read the learning outcomes and assessment criteria that follow this section then you will see that one of the main areas for your assessment is upon how well you meet technical parameters to enable your work to be broadcast.

You will be required to work in small teams, ideally, two, or three people per team.

You will be required to submit three pieces of work for assessment.

• An individual reflective journal (Blog)
• An individual interactive DVD showreel
• A group film fit for broadcast

Journal
This should focus on your plans for this project, your brief, your project schedule, and your performance as a team member. These can be supplemented by a group journal to help communication with team members, but the primary concern is your individual reflective account. These should be hosted on Blogspot, or Wordpress and the URLs submitted to your tutor.

Showreel
Your showreel will take the form of a menu driven interactive DVD where users will be able to select which of your work they view. You will be expected to assemble a reel that demonstrates the breadth of your capability, and the diversity of your style as an animator. As such, you may use work from any point in your studies, or from outside your time at college. You may also consider generating new work this term to supplement perceived gaps in your portfolio. The main drivers for assessment here are NOT the quality of the individual pieces of work, but the way in which you choose to present them and to promote yourself…

Movie
This is where the majority of your effort will be directed for this project. You will have to choose a team first of all, ideally a small one of two or three individuals. Then you will have to negotiate a brief for your project. There are three main ways that you can fulfill this part of the brief, but all will depend upon you having a real client, and it is up to YOU to get information from your client to define your brief. This information should include a list of deliverable items, and a set of deadlines.

Way 1
Work as a junior on a BA film project.
Identify the film you want to work on, agree a role, agree deliverables, and then deliver them. It will not be possible to do much in the way of concept or modeling work for these films given the advanced state of their development, but it should be possible to do large amounts of UV mapping and texturing, lighting, rigging and animating.

Way 2
Work towards Rave Live.
This will involve you either working towards doing one of the six channel idents, in which case you will have to contact the graphics students responsible, or towards generating programme content in which case you will have to contact broadcast content creation students to find out their requirements. Be aware that work will need to be ready much in advance of May 19th, so it should be viable within a reduced time frame. Remember the panic that you had at the end of last term? That is a luxury that you do not have this term. It would probably be a good idea to attend all possible meetings about Rave Live, such as the one this Friday (26th) read your email, and look for posters…

The 3rd Way
Find an external client.
You may source a client for your project beyond the confines of college. The same conditions apply, you will negotiate a brief, and whatever work you produce must be produced in a form that is technically suitable for broadcast purposes. Other than that, the subject matter or content are entirely down to you and your client. This is possibly the most challenging of the three ways you can fulfill this project…
